Homemade Beauty Products for Kids to Make

Girls just love to look and feel pretty! Luckily, there are lots of products to help us look our best. Some of those products, however, are tested on helpless animals, or are very expensive to buy.

Did you know that many of the items you buy at the drug store can be made at home for just pennies each? You don’t need special equipment or fancy ingredients. All you need are some items found in your own kitchen cabinets, or that can be purchased cheaply at your local drug store. The process isn’t hard at all. In fact, making your own beauty products is easy and fun. So, let’s get started!

You will need this simple equipment:

Small shallow bowls for mixing, made of glass or china, NOT plastic. ( plastic bowls can change the scent ).

Measuring spoons

Spoons and forks for mixing

A measuring cup

An eye dropper

Small jars and bottles with screw on lids---empty baby food jars and medicine bottles work well, or small jars that hold 2-3 oz.

A small funnel

Newspapers and paper towels for mess prevention and clean up.

Labels.

Ribbons, bows, marking pens, or other items to decorate your bottles with an artistic flair!

You will need these easy to find ingredients:

2 ounce bottle of glycerin

Rosewater, limewater

Rubbing alcohol---70% ethyl alcohol, NOT isopropyl alcohol!

Lemon, orange, peppermint, vanilla extracts

Olive oil

Food coloring

Pure soap flakes

Essential oils, especially lavender, lemon, orange, or even musk or patchouli

Now, here are some simple recipes to follow, so you can make some beauty products easily and in very little time.

Lotion:

3 Tablespoons of glycerin

9 Tablespoons of rosewater

Funnel them both into a bottle, cap tightly and shake. or try this---

3 Tablespoons of olive oil

3 Tablespoons of limewater

1-2 drops of food coloring, if you’d like

several drops of essential oil for fragrance

Funnel into a bottle and shake vigorously, as the oil and limewater will tend to separate.

Soap balls:

1 cup of pure soap flakes

2 teaspoons of hot water

several drops of food coloring

several drops of essential oil or extract

Pour the soap flakes into a bowl.

In a separate bowl dissolve the food coloring in the hot water.

Gradually add this liquid to the soap flakes and mix well until it feels like wet clay. If you need more water, add it one drop at a time. You may find it easier to mix it with your hands, not with a spoon.

Pinch off small pieces and roll them into balls, about the size of walnuts.

Put them in a small box lined with pretty colored tissues.

Bath salts:

4 Tablespoons of baking soda

several drops of food coloring

several drops of scent

Put the baking soda in one bowl, and the scent and food coloring mixed together in a second bowl.

Add the liquid to the baking soda, using a spoon to grind the coloring and scent in.

Mix well, until the bath salts have an even color and no wet spots remain. The mixture should look and feel dry.

Store it in a jar.

Perfume takes a long time to “ripen” or become ready to use, so patience is required. This recipe ripens fairly quickly:

1 dried orange peeling

1 dried lemon peeling ( Note about the citrus peels: When you cut the peel from the orange or lemon, try to get as little white pith under the skin as possible. Let the peeling dry for several days until it is hard, and then break it into smaller pieces ).

1 Tablespoon dried rosemary leaves ( soak the leaves in water for an hour and then drain the water off ).

Place these in a large, wide mouthed jar and cover them with rubbing alcohol. Cap the jar tightly and shake it.

Let it ripen for about a week. It is ready if you can smell the citrus more than the alcohol. If the scent is too weak after 10 days of ripening, strain the used peel out, save the alcohol, and add more dried peel and let it ripen a few more days.

Filter the perfume through a piece of muslin into perfume bottles.

You may like the scent as is, or at this point you may add a few drops of lavender, musk oil or other scent.

Sachet powder:

4 teaspoons of talcum powder---unscented is best, but any kind is OK

4 teaspoons of table salt

2 teaspoons of a variety of spices, mixed---try cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, anise, and clove

2 teaspoons of dried rosemary leaves

several drops of scent

First mix the dry ingredients

Add the scent, drop by drop, stirring until there are no wet spots in the mixture.

Spoon the powder into envelopes, seal them, and put them in your clothes drawers to make everything smell nice. You can also put the powder in small bags made out of muslin.

One final note. Some homemade beauty products don’t last a long time. It is best to use them quickly. If you need to store them, keep the lids on tight, and put them in a dark place.

Now go out and enjoy the beautiful new you!
